03/02/22 – Our partners at the University of Valencia and their colleagues have published a paper showing how the marine environment may be home to microbial communities of biotechnological interest especially with regards to tackling plastic waste. Bacteria, isolated from sediment found in plastic bottles collected from the beach, showed enhanced growth when polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic or PET additives were used as carbon sources. The paper ‘Living in a bottle: Bacteria from sediment-associated Mediterranean waste and potential growth on polyethylene terephthalate’ – can be found here.
